The Porsche 924 was Porsche’s entry level sports car from 1976 to 1982 and 1987-1988, replacing the Porsche 914. It is a two-door, 2+2 coupe powered by a front-mounted, water-cooled engine, the first of its type to be manufactured by Porsche. Additionally, it was the first Porsche with the available option of automatic transmission and it was unusual for the company in that it offered rear-wheel drive with a front-mounted engine. The Porsche 924 is equipped with a 2.0L or 2.5L water-cooled L4 engine and weighed in at 2,381 pounds. The car model was successful, and over 150,000 were produced. This helped to put Porsche on a better financial track and built the company a revenue stream that it would use in the future to build the Porsche 911. The car was originally intended to be a Volkswagen flagship coupe model. Porsche was owned by Volkswagen and the former company did the bulk of the car giant’s research and development. The 1973 Oil Crisis stagnated the project, but it was eventually moved to Porsche because it could find a market as a more expensive car with a prestigious name.
